What Is CNAM? How It Works, and Its Importance

What is CNAM

While caller ID has been around for decades, it doesn’t always protect us from unwanted calls or fraud.🛡️

🔍CNAM allows phones to display the caller’s name, not just an unfamiliar phone number.

This technology helps identify who’s calling and reduces the risk of falling victim to fraud.

So, let’s dive deeper into CNAM and understand its importance.💡

🔑KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • CNAM displays the caller’s name alongside the phone number for better identification and reduces spam calls.
  • Inbound CNAM helps recipients view the caller’s name, while Outbound CNAM allows businesses to display their brand name.
  • CNAM enhances trust, improves call answer rates, and boosts security, especially for businesses handling sensitive information.
  • CNAM faces challenges, including potential inaccuracies, limited global availability, and vulnerability to spoofing.

What Is CNAM (Caller ID Name)?

CNAM, or Caller ID Name, is a feature that shows the caller’s identification related to the phone number on the recipient’s screen caller ID. It relies on a database that’s searched by the recipient’s carrier service to retrieve the name linked to the phone number.

Caller ID Name (CNAM)

So, it does three things to be clear: first, it identifies the caller; second, it finds the database origin; and third, it shows the name format. It shows the caller’s identity, which also reduces the chances of answering spam calls.

How Does CNAM Work?

First, to activate CNAM, an individual or business must register their intended name with a provider. This usually requires providing information like a phone number and preferred display name, which follows certain character limits and formatting rules.

Once this is done, the name takes some time to show up in the system. If both the caller and the recipient are registered in the CNAM database, the recipient’s device will display the name; otherwise, it will display only the phone number.

Now, what happens behind the scenes is that CNAM integrates a caller’s phone number with a name in a CNAM database.

It involves sending the originating phone number during a call to the receiving party’s carrier, who in turn asks the CNAM database for any attached names. In such cases, that name will appear on the recipient’s Caller ID, matched with the phone number.

Why Is CNAM Important?

To the point, CNAM is important because it promotes better caller identification. One can see who is calling, which in turn increases the chances of answering such calls, especially in the days of rampant spam and robocalling.

This feature goes beyond reducing anxiety over spam calls. It’s also very helpful for businesses to establish their brand identification through verified call identification.

Types of CNAM

Primarily, there are two types of CNAM (Caller ID Name) services:

1. Inbound CNAM

Inbound CNAM refers to when the recipient’s carrier pulls the caller’s name from a CNAM database when receiving a call. When there’s an incoming call, the recipient’s carrier looks up the name associated with the incoming number in one or more CNAM databases.

If a match is found, this information will appear on the receiver’s caller ID system. If the recipient knows who has called, answering the phone may be further facilitated.

2. Outbound CNAM

Outbound CNAM deals with caller name information that is actually outbound calls dialed from a particular number.

Businesses or individuals can request their preferred CNAM details from their service provider, who sends that information to the responsible CNAM database providers. So, when an outbound call comes, their registered name shows up on the recipient’s caller ID.

What Is the Difference Between Caller and CNAM?

Briefly, we have defined Caller ID and CNAM and shown the difference in the table.

Difference between CNAM and Caller
  Caller ID CNAM
Purpose To identify the caller’s phone number before answering. Provide the caller’s name along with the phone number for better identification.
Data source Phone number of the caller, typically from the originating carrier. CNAM databases that store names associated with phone numbers queried by the recipient’s carrier.
Accuracy Generally accurate but may not always display names; relies on available data. Can vary in accuracy; it depends on the quality of the CNAM database information.
Display Shows the caller’s phone number (and sometimes a name if available). Displays the caller’s name (up to 15 characters) with the phone number.
Use cases Commonly used for personal calls and basic business identification. Useful for businesses to enhance brand recognition and for users to screen calls.

Some Advantages and Disadvantages of CNAM

CNAM has its equal benefits and drawbacks that can impact consumers and businesses. So, it’s equally essential to understand them.

Advantages of CNAM

  • Increased Credibility: One of the most significant benefits of CNAM is that it enhances the company’s credibility. When a caller ID has the name of the calling company, it reflects a good impression and builds trust with the target customer. It will be easier for customers to interact with a known entity than with an anonymous caller.
  • Improved Call Answer Rates: Individuals are more likely to answer calls from familiar names than from strange numbers. This is helpful in creating avenues for engagement and conversion, especially in sales and customer service.
  • Better Customer Experience: When clients have some recognizable name flashing on their caller ID, it adds a hint of personalization to the interaction. That will make customers feel important and respected, which increases their desire to converse.
  • Spam Call Reduction: CNAM helps reduce spam calls by letting users identify calls coming from known callers. If the customer can specify the name associated with the number, customers will be less likely to answer calls from an undefined or untrusted source.
  • Enhanced Security and Trust: CNAM in sensitive industries includes but is not limited to, the financial and healthcare sectors. It provides an extra degree of security because it assures customers when sensitive information is exchanged over the phone.

Disadvantages of CNAM

  • Potential Inaccuracy: One major drawback to CNAM is the possibility of errors in the displayed name. The information on CNAM databases is not always updated or correct so it might give the wrong name for a particular number. This can be confusing to recipients, especially if they may receive calls from unknown numbers.
  • Limited Availability: CNAM services are supported primarily in the United States and parts of Canada, limiting their usefulness in international communications. Companies that operate globally will find their calls do not display CNAM information to recipients in areas where this service is not supported.
  • Dependency on Database Updates: The effectiveness of CNAM depends on the correctness and timely updating of records. Carriers’ delays in updating the records may cause users to receive outdated or incorrect information when receiving a call. This is dependent on inconsistencies in caller identification, which can negatively affect business communications.
  • Cost Implications: Implementing CNAM services may result in increased expenses for the company, as it may be necessary to tie up with specialty providers or upgrade the office communication system. Though some VoIP services include CNAM under a package deal, some might charge additional fees.
  • Vulnerability to Spoofing: Although CNAM provides useful information, it is also prone to spoofing, particularly displaying untrue names with the number. This indicates that fraudsters deceive individuals with spoofed caller IDs. The fact that it can be spoofed weakens its reliability as a security measure.

Wrapping Up

CNAM is a powerful tool in the telecommunication industry as it offers better caller identification, reducing spam and fraudulent calls. It shows the caller’s name to the users, building trust with increased call answer rates, especially for businesses dealing with sensitive information.

However, like any technology, CNAM has its drawbacks, including potential inaccuracies and vulnerabilities to spoofing. Despite these challenges, CNAM is a good feature that continues to improve communication, making it easier to recognize legitimate calls and avoid unwanted ones.
